According to temple legend, it is an ancient temple in Gifu Prefecture, known as Dainichisan Nichiryuho-ji Temple, and is the first Kannon sacred site of the 33 temples of the Mino Saigoku region .
Commonly known as Takazawa Kannon, the principal image of the temple, the Thousand-Armed Kannon Bodhisattva, is well known for healing illnesses, warding off evil, and granting safe childbirth and children, and the temple is bustling with pilgrims from good men and women on the third Sunday of every month, the anniversary of the principal image's death.

This temple is located on the middle slope of Takayama Mountain, 283 meters above sea level, and the view of the Hida, Mino, Ibuki, and Yoro mountain ranges from this mountain is limitlessly beautiful. The temple grounds, which cover an area of several hundred tsubo (approx. 100m²), are covered with lush old trees, making it a scenic spot worthy of being a sacred place of Kannon in the secluded natural environment.
It is a famous spot rich in nature, with cherry blossoms and mountain azaleas in spring, firefly hunting and sweetfish fishing in the Tsubo River in summer, autumn leaves, delicious chestnuts, and matsutake mushrooms in autumn, and the ridge mountain path from the summit of Takazawayama to Okunagara Mino City is a hiking course designated by the Prime Minister's Office, and is a rare sacred mountain that can be recommended as a place to relax.

The temple of the legend of Ryomen Sukuna
According to temple legend, during the reign of Emperor Nintoku (first half of the 5th century), there was a powerful clan leader named Ryomen Sukuna in Hida Province.
Ryomen Sukuna was a powerful local lord, and after receiving the Emperor's blessing, he went to the capital to meet him face to face.
その帰り、美濃加茂野ケ原で休憩していると、どこからともなく鳩二羽が不思議なさえずりをなして、高沢の峰に飛び去った。
The stranger was curious and asked the locals about it, and they heard that "there is a pond in the Takazawa mountain range where a divine dragon lives and causes harm to the villagers in the surrounding area." So he climbed a distant peak, chanted a mantra of great compassion, drove away the divine dragon, and founded a temple on this peak.

Greetings from the chief priest
The 43rd Chief Priest, Tsunehide Muroga
Welcome to the website of Nichiryuho-ji Temple. Our temple is an ancient esoteric Buddhist temple located in the lush green mountains halfway up Mt. Takayama. Its founder, Ryomen Sukuna, has a long history. The temple grounds include the seven halls, a pagoda donated by Hojo Masako, and a main hall and other historical buildings built in the same style as Kiyomizu-dera Temple in Kyoto. You can also enjoy hiking and mountain climbing, experiencing history and nature firsthand and purifying your soul.
The principal image is the Thousand-Armed and Thousand-Eyed Kannon Bodhisattva. It is commonly known as Takazawa Kannon, after Takazawayama Kannon. The third Sunday of every month is the festival day for the principal image. On the festival day, you can view the inner sanctuary of the main hall and the cage hall, which are normally closed to the public. We look forward to your visit. Gassho
